Today is a day that I never want to forget; so enjoyable and beautiful that I want to share with everyone. I wish I could actually live these moments with all the people that I love. Since it is not possible, I am here now to make you feel like you are sharing this experience with me in Mumm Napa.


Entance to Mumm Napa, a unique experience!

After a hard working day in the winery, we went to Mumm Napa for tasting with my two colleagues. When we arrived there, Claudia Colantuoni, the loveliest Italian-North American woman that I know, met us and accompanied us in one of the best tastings in my life.

Well, if you already read my blog previously, you must know my interest on sparkling wines. (You can always go back in the blog and read about my interesting experiment and small production of sparkling wine.) For me, making a sparkling wine is like adding life to a still wine. And in Mumm Napa, I found this magical addition of life in the wine.

Mumm Napa was founded by Guy Devaux in California in late 70s, with its roots coming from G.H. Mumm Champagne. For more information about the history of Mumm Napa you might want to visit their website:


To begin with…

We started with three sparkling wines. Just a small parenthesis about the name sparkling wine: It is not permitted to use the name “Champagne” in USA, but of course they are still producing their sparkling wines with “le method traditional”, the same method that is used in Champagne region. Being out of the Champagne regulations gives them a little bit of more freedom in their production, they can enrich their sparklings with different varieties than in Champagne or they can choose their tirage time according to the style that they want to obtain.

Going back to three sparklings we had in the beginning:

  • Blanc de Blancs Reserve (80% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Gris, 48 months of tirage time)
  • Brut Reserve Rosé (66% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay, 36 months of tirage time)
  • DVX 2007 (50% Pinot Noir, 50% Chardonnay, 6 years of tirage time)

The first things to be noticed in my glasses were their tiny little bubbles that move to the top of the glass, without rushing and with all their persistency. After this important detail, I started to taste them.

Blanc de Blancs Reserve has all the fresh aromas in the nose; citrus, peach, apple… In the mouth it is crispy and fresh with its mouthwatering acidity.

Brut Reserve Rosé was like entering to an orchard full of strawberries and raspberries and in the exit you also meet with other red fruits which make your visit even more delightful.

DVX 2007 has all the elegancy with its complex aromas of apricot, pear, white flowers; linden and jasmine with small hints of vanilla. It was sliding smoothly in the mouth with its creamy texture by leaving a pleasant after-taste.

In this trio my favorite was the Brut Reserve Rosé, with all the charm that it has. When Claudia Colantuoni came back and asked our favorites, she understood our taste and brought us 2 other rosés:

  • Brut Rosé (85% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay, 18 months of tirage time)
  • DVX Rosé 2010 (50% Pinot Noir, 50% Chardonnay, 48 months of tirage time)


These two sparklings firstly distinguished from each other with their color, Brut Rosé has a coral color while DVX Rosé is more likely to have a salmon to pink color. It was getting really difficult to choose a favorite, both of them amazed me and I would drink them in different occasions; for example Brut Rosé in a lazy Sunday in my garden or at a small picnic and DVX Rosé on a nice dinner event around a delicious table or when I have something important to toast for.

To finish with, Claudia Colantuoni brought us another millésime, DVX 2008. It was as complex and creamy as the 2007.

In the end we had a picturesque view in our table surrounded by a pleasant atmosphere. I am sure the charming panorama of the vineyards, open air and happy people around me affected my tasting notes in a positive way. These sparkles amazed me with their breathtaking aromas.  Moreover the price/quality ratio of the sparklings is absolutely balanced.

I really recommend everyone who will pass from Napa, to visit this amazing place. I will definitely come back to visit inside of the winery which I did not have chance to see yet. Moreover after your tasting, you can visit the photograph galleries that they have just next to the tasting area. In the end, your experience will be fully satisfying!
